With the recent flooding, Roanoke Gas is taking steps to ensure the safety of its employees and the public. The Company is providing the following guidelines associated with natural gas safety during any weather emergency.

Indoor Safety Tips:

  • If flooding occurs at your residence or business and gas appliances are under water, customers are advised not to operate their appliances until a safety inspection is conducted by a certified plumber or HVAC representative.
  • If you choose to shut off your gas appliances, have an HVAC representative turn them back on, leak test the line, and test the appliance for safe operation.
  • An HVAC representative will be able to remove mud or debris which may impact your appliances. It is important that the licensed contractor check the controls and switches, thermostats, burner and pilot light parts and make sure there is no rusting.
  • Electronic ignition appliances will not come on when the power source has been impacted.
  • If customers smell a rotten-egg odor, they should leave the area immediately. Call Roanoke Gas’ 24-hour emergency line at (540) 777-0623 or 911 once you are in a safe place and away from the suspected leak. For more information on signs of a gas leak: click here

Outdoor Safety Tips:

  • If your natural gas meter is damaged or an underground gas line is exposed, customers should immediately leave the area, and call Roanoke Gas’ 24-hour emergency line at (540) 777-0623 or 911 from a safe location.
  • To ensure safe, proper operation of natural gas appliances and to prevent the potentially hazardous buildup of Carbon Monoxide, ensure that outdoor vent openings and air intakes are not obstructed. For more information on signs of Carbon Monoxide: click here
  • Strong winds and saturated ground could cause trees to become uprooted. Before removing downed trees, customers should contact VA811 to have the location of underground utility lines marked because downed trees could become tangled with natural gas lines.
